Click or drag PDFs here (multiple supported; extraction starts automatically)
Extract Text from PDF is an online tool that runs entirely in your browser to pull the text out of PDF files into editable, copyable plain text. Extraction starts automatically once you add a file, and the result keeps the original page breaks and reading order. You can copy it in one click or download it as a TXT file. Nothing is uploaded to a server.
This tool can only extract text that already exists in the PDF. If the file is a scan, a photo, or a page made entirely of images (no text layer), there is no text to pull out, the result will be empty, and the tool will note "No text on this page. It may be a scanned image." This tool does not perform OCR. Such image-only PDFs must first be converted with an OCR tool into files that have a text layer before text can be extracted.
Q: Is this tool free?
A: Yes, extracting, copying, and downloading text are all free, with no registration or sign-in required.
Q: Are my files safe?
A: Yes. Extraction runs entirely in your browser, so the PDF files are never uploaded to a server.
Q: Why is the result empty?
A: It means the PDF has no text layer, usually because it is a scan or image-only file. This tool does not do OCR, so you need to run it through an OCR tool first.
Q: Can I extract text from an encrypted PDF?
A: No. An encrypted file triggers a "password-protected" notice; remove the password first with the Unlock PDF tool, then extract.
Q: Does it work on mobile devices?
A: Yes. The page is responsive, so you can upload, copy, and download text on phones and tablets as well.
