Tool Introduction

Add Page Numbers to PDF is an online tool that runs entirely in your browser to insert page numbers, headers, and footers into PDF files. You can pick the number style, position, and appearance, confirm the result with a live preview, and download the finished file. Nothing is uploaded to a server, making it ideal for contracts, papers, reports, and ebooks that need proper pagination.

Key Features

  • Multiple number formats: built-in styles include plain numbers, "- 1 -", Roman numerals, Chinese numerals, "Page 1", "Page X of Y", and "1 / x", plus a custom template.
  • Six positions: place page numbers at the top or bottom of the page, aligned left, center, or right.
  • Header and footer: add custom header and footer text in addition to page numbers, each with placeholder and position options.
  • Starting number and skip first page: begin numbering from any value, and skip the cover so the first page gets no number, header, or footer.
  • Adjustable appearance: control font size (8-36), color (with preset swatches), and page margin (8-72 pt).
  • Live preview: every change shows instantly on a sample or real page, and you can switch between files when previewing.
  • Batch processing and ZIP: add multiple PDFs and process them in a queue, stop at any time, then download results one by one or as a ZIP.
  • Local and secure: everything happens in your browser; files are never uploaded to a server.

Use Cases

  • Adding standard page numbers to papers, reports, or bids for printing and binding.
  • Numbering ebooks or scanned documents that lack page numbers, for easier reference.
  • Stamping a document title, organization name, or classification in the header or footer.
  • Processing many PDFs at once with the same page-number style before archiving or sharing.

How to Use

  1. Click the upload area or drag PDFs into it; you can select multiple files at once.
  2. Choose a number format, then set position, starting number, font size, color, and margin, and fill in the header or footer if needed.
  3. Check the preview to confirm the style, switching files if necessary.
  4. Click "Add page numbers" and the tool processes each file in turn, showing progress.
  5. When finished, download the results individually or as a ZIP package.

About Number Templates and Placeholders

Beyond the built-in styles, choosing "Custom" lets you build the text with placeholders: {page} is the current page number, {total} is the page count, {page:roman} and {total:roman} convert to Roman numerals, and {page:cn} and {total:cn} convert to Chinese numerals. For example, the template "Page {page} of {total}" renders as "Page 1 of 10". The header and footer support these placeholders too.

FAQ

Q: Is this tool free?

A: Yes, adding page numbers and batch processing are completely free, with no registration or sign-in required.

Q: Are my files safe?

A: Yes. Everything runs locally in your browser, so the PDF files are never uploaded to a server.

Q: Can I add page numbers to an encrypted PDF?

A: No. An encrypted file triggers a "password-protected" notice; remove the password first with the Unlock PDF tool, then add page numbers.

Q: Can I skip the cover page?

A: Yes. Tick "Skip first page" to leave the cover without a number, header, or footer; numbering then runs continuously from your starting value to the last page.

Q: Does it work on mobile devices?

A: Yes. The page is responsive, so you can upload, preview, and download files on phones and tablets as well.
