In 2014, an Italian developer named Gabriele Cirulli wrote 2048 over a weekend.

The Rules Are Simple

A 4×4 grid of numbers. Swipe to make numbers slide and merge — identical numbers combine into double their value. The goal is to reach 2048.

That's it. No story, no levels, no characters. Just a grid and some numbers.

And yet this minimal mechanic can keep a person sitting motionless for two hours, reflexively tapping "play again" the moment a game ends.

Why Is It So Addictive?

There's a psychological principle called intermittent reinforcement — receiving a reward only sometimes, unpredictably, is actually more compulsive than receiving one every time.

2048 is a perfect example. Most games you lose. Occasionally one goes well — the numbers grow, you get that feeling of I'm almost there — and then the board fills up and you lose again. That almost feeling is exactly what makes you open another game.

The other reason is that strategy genuinely matters. A game that's pure luck gets boring fast. 2048 rewards thought — the same moves in a different order produce very different results, which makes you feel like I just didn't play well enough, not like the game is unfair. So you want to try again.

Is There a Winning Strategy?

There are patterns, though nothing guarantees a win.

The most widely endorsed approach is the corner strategy: lock your highest-value tile in one corner, and arrange everything else around it in descending order. This keeps your merge paths clear and the board from falling into chaos.

In practice: pick a corner (say, bottom-left), keep that position as your current highest tile at all times, and avoid moves that pull it away from the corner.

Luck still plays a role in whether you hit 2048, but this approach significantly improves the odds.
