Website Introduction

Internet Archive is a nonprofit digital library founded in 1996 by Brewster Kahle, headquartered in San Francisco, California. Its mission is "Universal Access to All Knowledge," and it operates one of the world's largest open repositories of digitized media.

📚 Collection Scale

As of 2024, the Internet Archive holds:

  • 42.5+ million print and digital books
  • 13+ million videos (documentaries, news programs, public domain films)
  • 14+ million audio files (music albums, podcasts, speeches, radio recordings)
  • 1.2+ million software programs (historic applications, vintage games)
  • 3 million TV news reports
  • 1 trillion+ web page snapshots (via the Wayback Machine)

🔍 Core Services

  • Wayback Machine: The Archive's flagship service — a digital time capsule for the web. Users can enter any URL and browse historical snapshots of websites at any point in time, or manually submit pages for immediate archiving.
  • Open Library: A project aiming to create a catalog page for every book ever published. It holds 25 million bibliographic records and offers free reading of public domain works as well as controlled digital lending.
  • Internet Archive Scholar: Over 35 million research articles and scholarly documents with full-text access, serving as an open alternative to academic paywalls.
  • Archive-It: A subscription web archiving service for institutions — libraries, universities, archives, and museums — enabling them to build and manage curated digital collections. Over 800 institutions participate.
  • Live Music Archive: Hundreds of thousands of concert recordings, predominantly from artists who have granted permission for taping and free distribution.
  • Software & Games: Run historic software directly in the browser via emulators — including DOS games, Apple II programs, and early console titles — no installation required.

🌐 Open Access & Mission

The Internet Archive operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. All public collections are free to access with no subscription required. Registered users (free) can upload their own content and contribute to preservation efforts. Collections include public domain works, Creative Commons-licensed content, and materials with open redistribution rights.

In September 2024, Google and the Internet Archive announced a partnership integrating Wayback Machine archive links into Google Search's "More about this page" panel, effectively replacing Google's discontinued cache service. In July 2025, the U.S. Senate designated the Internet Archive as a Federal Depository Library, granting it an official role in preserving public government records.

⚠️ Notes

The Internet Archive has faced significant legal challenges around its digital book lending program, resulting in the removal of over 500,000 books from Open Library following court rulings in favor of major publishers. In October 2024, the organization suffered a major cyberattack affecting 31 million user accounts. Services have since been restored, though some features experienced extended downtime. Users in certain regions may encounter access restrictions.
