12 Barcode Formats — Which One Do You Need?

There are many formats, but only a handful are commonly used. Match your scenario to the right one:

EAN-13: 13-digit numeric code. The global standard for retail product barcodes — the one you see on supermarket shelves. If you're doing e-commerce product management, this is almost certainly the format you need.

UPC-A: 12-digit numeric code. The standard retail barcode for the North American market — frequently required by Amazon US sellers.

CODE128: Supports letters and numbers, no length restriction. The go-to format for logistics, courier labels, and warehouse bin tags. The barcode on a shipping package is typically this format.

CODE39: Supports letters, numbers, and a small set of special characters. Common in industrial, medical, and library settings — excellent compatibility with a wide range of scanning hardware.

ITF (Interleaved 2 of 5): Numeric only, even number of digits required. Widely used for outer carton barcodes — prints reliably on corrugated cardboard.

Codabar: Used in hospital blood banks, courier waybills, and legacy library systems. Supports digits plus a small selection of special characters.
