What Is BMI and How Is It Calculated?

BMI stands for Body Mass Index. The formula is straightforward:

BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ Height² (m²)

For example, for someone 170 cm tall and weighing 65 kg:

BMI = 65 ÷ (1.70 × 1.70) ≈ 22.5

What Does Each Range Mean?

Based on Chinese adult standards (which differ slightly from Western standards):

BMI Range Category
Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 – 23.9 Normal
24.0 – 27.9 Overweight
28.0 and above Obese

Note: Chinese standards are slightly stricter than the WHO's general guidelines — the WHO sets the upper limit of the normal range at 24.9, while China's standard is 23.9. The same person may get different results depending on which standard is applied.

What Are the Limitations of BMI?

BMI is a screening indicator, not a precise diagnosis. There are a few notable limitations worth knowing:

① It doesn't distinguish muscle from fat. A highly muscular athlete may show as "overweight" by BMI, yet have very low body fat and be in excellent health. Conversely, some people fall within the normal BMI range but have high body fat percentages — a condition known medically as "normal weight obesity" — which still carries health risks.

② It doesn't account for fat distribution. Visceral fat is more harmful than subcutaneous fat, but BMI can't tell them apart. Waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio are better supplementary measures.

③ It has limited applicability for the elderly and children. These groups have dedicated assessment standards.

BMI is best used as an initial reference point. If you're serious about understanding your health, body fat percentage and waist circumference should be considered alongside it.

So Why Bother Calculating BMI?

Because it's simple — and for most ordinary people, it still provides genuine reference value.

If your BMI shows overweight or obese, there's a good chance your weight does warrant attention. If it falls within the normal range, it at least suggests your weight isn't an obvious concern.

As a number to check periodically, BMI is worth calculating every once in a while.

What Else Does the Tool Provide?

Beyond the number and category, the tool also offers specific diet and exercise guidance based on your BMI range — not generic advice like "exercise more and eat less," but targeted recommendations for different situations such as being underweight or overweight.
