Toolshu's Morse Code Encoder / Decoder converts between English text and Morse code in both directions, with customizable separators and nothing unnecessary getting in the way.

How to Use It

The page is divided into two sections:

Encode (Text → Morse): Enter English letters or numbers in the top input box, click Encode, and the corresponding Morse code appears below.

Decode (Morse → Text): Paste Morse code into the bottom input box, click Decode, and the original text is restored.

Each section has a clear button for easy switching between the two modes.

Separator options: Slash (/), pipe (|), or space — three formats supported to accommodate Morse code from different sources.

What Is Morse Code?

Morse code was invented by American inventor Samuel Morse and his assistant Alfred Vail in the 1830s, originally designed to transmit messages over telegraph machines. In 1844, Morse successfully sent the first long-distance telegraph in human history.

The encoding rules are straightforward: each letter and number maps to a fixed sequence of dots (.) and dashes (—). A dot is a short signal; a dash is a long signal (three times the duration of a dot).

A few common examples:

  • E: . (the shortest code — E is the most frequent letter in English)
  • T: -
  • S: ...
  • O: ---
  • SOS: ... --- ...

Supported Characters

The tool supports all 26 English letters, digits 0–9, and common punctuation including periods, commas, question marks, exclamation marks, parentheses, and slashes.

Chinese characters are not supported — Morse code itself has no standard encoding for Chinese.

Who Would Use This?

Escape room and murder mystery players: Morse code is one of the most common puzzle elements in these games. Knowing it in advance gives you a real edge.

Amateur radio (ham radio) operators: The global ham radio community still actively uses Morse code for contacts. This tool is handy for quickly verifying encode/decode accuracy.

Teaching and demonstrations: Show students how Morse code works — type input and watch the output appear in real time. Concrete and intuitive.

Sending secret messages: Communicate with friends in a code only you two can read. There's a distinct sense of ceremony to it.
