"Before Tang came Sui, and before Sui was… the Southern and Northern Dynasties? Or the Northern Zhou?"

For anyone whose history knowledge is a bit rusty, the order of Chinese dynasties tends to be a blur. Whether you're watching a historical drama, reading an article with dynasty references, or helping a child with homework — you'll eventually need to look it up.

Toolshu's Chinese Dynasty Reference tool covers start and end years, major historical events, and notable figures for every dynasty in Chinese history — no textbook or encyclopedia required.

The Order of Chinese Dynasties — A Quick Rundown

From the Xia dynasty to the Qing, the main sequence of Chinese dynasties runs:

Xia → Shang → Zhou (Western/Eastern) → Qin → Han (Western/Eastern) → Three Kingdoms → Jin (Western/Eastern) → Northern and Southern Dynasties → Sui → Tang → Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms → Song (Northern/Southern) → Yuan → Ming → Qing

It looks straightforward, but each period has layers: Zhou splits into Western and Eastern Zhou; Han into Western and Eastern Han; the Northern and Southern Dynasties era also saw the "Sixteen Kingdoms" in the north; alongside the Five Dynasties there were "Ten Kingdoms" in the south. A reference tool makes all this far clearer than trying to memorize it.

Dates and Details People Often Get Wrong

841 BC: The earliest year in Chinese history with confirmed written records — known as the "Gonghe Regency Year One." Dates before this are retrospective estimates and carry some uncertainty.

Shang is also called Yin: After King Pangeng relocated the capital to Yin around the 14th century BC, the Shang dynasty also became known as "Yin" — which is why you'll see terms like "Yin-Shang" or "King Zhou of Yin" in historical references.

The Xin Dynasty (Wang Mang): Between the Western Han and Eastern Han, there was a brief interlude — the Xin Dynasty (8–23 AD). Many people don't know it existed and assume the Han was one continuous dynasty.

Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms: In the 53 years between the fall of the Tang (907 AD) and the founding of the Northern Song (960 AD), northern China cycled through five successive regimes known as the "Five Dynasties," while the south simultaneously fragmented into ten separate states known as the "Ten Kingdoms."

When Would You Use This Tool?

  • Watching historical dramas: Look up which era a show is set in, who the emperor was, and get more out of the story.
  • Helping with homework: "How long did the Qin dynasty last?" "What year did the Tang dynasty fall?" Answered in seconds.
  • Writing with historical references: Verify dynasty dates before committing them to an article — avoid embarrassing errors.
  • Studying for history exams: Walk through the dynasty timeline systematically — more effective than rote-memorizing individual years.
